Can Nitrogen support human life?

Nitrogen is an inert gas that makes up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere. While it is abundant, it is not utilized by humans for respiration or metabolic processes. Our bodies require oxygen to support the respiratory and energy production systems essential for life. When inhaled, nitrogen does not participate in these necessary processes and therefore cannot support human life.

This understanding is pivotal because while nitrogen is critical in various biological processes, including its role in the formation of amino acids and nucleotides, it cannot be directly used for breathing. The human respiratory system specifically requires gases that can participate in gas exchange within the lungs and enter the bloodstream efficiently—properties that nitrogen does not possess.
